Canada approves recreational use of marijuana
This morning, Parliament definitively approved the recreational use of marijuana, becoming the second country in the world after Uruguay.
The Senate passed the bill for the recreational use of marijuana a few weeks ago, but it still needed approval from the House of Representatives.
The legalization of recreational marijuana use was an election promise made by Prime Minister Justin Truedeau, and after seven months of debate it has been made a reality.
The legal cannabis market is expected to be ready in a period of between eight and twelve weeks, by mid-September.
Health Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor said that provinces will need two to three months after the bill is passed before they are ready to implement the new legalized cannabis regime.
Each household may cultivate a maximum of four marijuana plants for recreational use.
Senator Tony Dean commented that this is a “transformative social policy” and “a courageous step by the Government.” Now Canada can “begin to address some of the harms of cannabis” and be “proactive in public education.” ”We will see the end of criminalization and can begin to tackle Canada’s $7 billion illegal market.”.
