Cannabis prevents the use of other drugs
Researchers from the University of Mexico, Dr. Anthony Reeve, Dr. Jacob Miguel Vigil, and Dr. Sarah See Stith, have conducted a five-year study confirming that cannabis is not a gateway drug but rather prevents the use of other drugs or medications. This debunks one of the most common fallacies among cannabis detractors, who argue the opposite: that cannabis is a precursor to the use of other drugs or illegal substances.
The study originated with Dr. Anthony Reeve, a pioneer in joining the Medical Cannabis Prescription Program in New Mexico. He observed that patients treated with medical cannabis or cannabis-derived products were reducing their reliance on opioid pain medications and visiting their doctor less frequently.
Reduced consumption of medications and other drugs by using medicinal cannabis
This study lasted five years and involved more than 125 patients. These patients suffered from conditions that caused chronic pain. Eighty-three patients were found to be using medical cannabis or a cannabis-derived product, while 42 patients were not. The result was that 34% of the patients who used cannabis stopped using other opioid medications.
It was then hypothesized that the legalization of medicinal cannabis would contribute to consuming fewer medications derived from opiates and even other drugs.
“No one has died from smoking too much cannabis. Therefore, the relative safety and efficacy of cannabis use compared to other prescribed medications should be taken into account by healthcare providers and policymakers, and very well should have been considered by the patients in our study.”
The researchers urge further studies and research, given that the effects of medicinal cannabis on patients taking multiple medications with opiate components were the same.
The conclusion is that cannabis could become one of the plants with the greatest medical potential of all those we have on our planet.
