CBD (cannabidiol) to combat psychosis

A study conducted by researchers at King's College London has discovered that a component of marijuana, CBD (cannabidiol), It has positive effects for the treatment of psychosis.

The results of the study are published in the medical journal JAMA Psychiatry, and demonstrate how the marijuana component cannabidiol (CBD) can help reduce abnormalities in brain function in people with psychosis and acts on the brain to reduce symptoms.

Scientists say the full implications are still a mystery and there is much more to study.

CBD may help reset brain activity

The study involved 33 young people, some of whom had already begun experiencing psychotic symptoms. Researchers administered a single dose of cannabidiol to 16 participants, while the remaining 17 received a placebo. Subsequently, the participants underwent an MRI scan while performing a memory task involving three brain regions associated with psychosis.

The brain activity of the young people with psychotic symptoms was abnormal compared to the others. But in the participants who had been given the dose of cannabidiol (CBD), the abnormal brain activity was less severe than in those who received the placebo dose.

Dr. Sagnik Bhattacharyya, from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience (IoPPN), commented that the mainstay of current treatment for people with psychosis is drugs that were first discovered in the 1950s, and unfortunately, they don't work for everyone. Our results have begun to unravel the brain mechanisms for a new drug that works in a completely different way than traditional antipsychotics.

King's College London suggests that cannabidiol (CBD) appears to work in opposition to tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), as the latter has been linked to the development of psychosis.

The institution states that: “It can be thought that THC mimics some of the effects of psychosis, while cannabidiol has largely opposite neurological and behavioral effects.”.
