The Parliament of Cantabria in favor of medicinal cannabis
The five political groups in the Parliament of Cantabria (PP, PSOE, PRC, Podemos and Ciudadanos) have approved a non-legislative proposal demanding that the Spanish government regulate and provide access to therapeutic treatments with medicinal cannabis and its derivatives.
The initiative has reached the plenary session thanks to Eduardo Van den Eynde, a PP deputy, and has been signed by all the political groups that make it up.
Member of Parliament Van den Eynde has been battling lung cancer for several years. He has undergone nine chemotherapy sessions and uses cannabis to combat nausea, calm his anxiety, and help him sleep. Since then, Van den Eynde has been advocating for the regulated use of medicinal cannabis for those conditions where its use significantly improves the patient's quality of life. He also states: “There are nearly 50,000 of us in Spain who use it clandestinely, forced to operate in unregulated markets and risking being caught on our way home with the product and facing a fine of between 600 and 10,000 euros. I am optimistic; I believe regulation will come, but our obligation is to fight to make it happen as soon as possible.”.
Cantabria joins the five autonomous communities that support the therapeutic use of medicinal cannabis (Basque Country, Catalonia, Valencia, Navarre, and the Balearic Islands). In the Basque Country, the Law on Addictions, which also recognizes cannabis social clubs, was passed, but the government has appealed it. In Navarre, the Regional Law on cannabis associations was passed, which was also appealed by the central government and is now awaiting a ruling from the Constitutional Court. Catalonia is developing a Popular Legislative Initiative on the regulation of cannabis associations, and the Balearic government has agreed to promote the regulation of cannabis and its cultivation.
