Nueva York no arrestará por consumo de marihuana en sus calles

In New York, you will not be arrested for cannabis use.

New York City police will stop arresting people for possession or use of cannabis on the streets. This change comes after statistics revealed racial discrimination in arrests.

According to a tweet from Mayor Bill de Blasio, he will decide to reform his policies regarding cannabis and end unnecessary arrests within a month, as he has notified the Police Department (NYPD).

Despite the lack of arrests, those who engage in the consumption or possession of cannabis still risk paying fines.

According to statistics, 86% of those arrested for possession or consumption of cannabis are black or of Latino origin, while consumption is similar among whites.

The mayor wants to focus police action on cases that pose a risk to public safety and declared that "We must put an end to unnecessary arrests and the disparity in the application of the laws.".

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance and Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez also announced that starting in August they will not prosecute most people arrested for marijuana use.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo wants to form a group to study the benefits of marijuana legalization. It's estimated that legalization would generate over $335 million in tax revenue for the city and about $435 million for the state as a whole.
