Marijuana genome research
For some time now, researchers have been trying to understand what gives cannabis its characteristic flavor, and recently Canadian researchers have obtained more data by analyzing the marijuana genome. They have located more than 30 genes that are responsible for giving the different cannabis varieties their prized flavor.
Columbia University professor and researcher Jörg Bohlmann has stated that: “the goal of this genome research is to be able to develop different, well-defined, and highly reproducible varieties of marijuana.”.
Bolhmann believes this study can help breeders of varieties to know which genes to pay attention to in order to preserve the flavor of each particular variety.
He also believes it is vital to be able to analyze to what extent terpene compounds could interact with cannabinoid compounds (THC, CBD,…) which give marijuana its medicinal properties.
