Large marijuana plantation in Portugal: 62 tons/year
The largest marijuana plantation for therapeutic use on the Iberian Peninsula will be located in northern Portugal, in collaboration with the Portuguese government. The Canadian multinational Tilray will manage the project, which represents an investment of €20 million and is expected to create over 100 jobs.
The large-scale plantation will be located in the small Portuguese town of Catanhede, in the Coimbra district, a town with approximately 7,000 inhabitants. Tilray Portugal plans to begin the first phase of the project this month: the construction of its facilities for cultivating and processing marijuana, including a 10,000 m² greenhouse and a 1,500 m² processing building, along with a laboratory and a genetic bank. It is estimated that by 2018, the plantation will produce 62 tons of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Portugal will be the main European producer of therapeutic cannabis
This project consists of two phases, the second phase is planned for 2020 with an expansion of 15,000 m2 in the greenhouse cultivation space and another 1,500 m2 for the processing space, doubling its production.
This project has been named EU Campus, with which it aims to reach 10 million customers and a turnover of 40 million euros.
Tilray's competitors are Bedrocan and MGC Pharmaceuticals, which have production facilities in the Czech Republic and the Netherlands. Tilray's CEO, Brendan Kennedy, stated that Portugal was chosen because of its ideal and favorable climate for cannabis cultivation, as well as its access to the common market and a highly skilled workforce.
Tilray operates in Canada, New Zealand, and Australia. The project in Portugal is focused on serving as a gateway to Europe, and especially to the German market, which has seen a significant increase in the consumption of licensed medicinal marijuana since the beginning of the year.
At the Portuguese plant, research will be conducted on the medicinal efficacy of marijuana; these studies will be carried out through partnerships with academic and hospital researchers in Portugal.
