Portugal legalizes medicinal cannabis, but not home cultivation
Last Friday, the Portuguese Parliament approved the law regulating cannabis-based drugs, preparations, and substances for medicinal purposes. Infarmed and the Military Laboratory will be involved in the production of these remedies.
It's worth noting that Portugal has allowed the private consumption of cannabis for 16 years, but not its distribution. However, distribution for export is permitted. This is the case with the Canadian company Tilray, which has been authorized by the Portuguese government to cultivate 25,000 square meters of cannabis in the area surrounding Coimbra.
The possibility of self-cultivation of medicinal cannabis for personal use is ruled out, arguing that personal production cannot be controlled.
The use of medicinal cannabis or products containing cannabinoids must always be prescribed by a doctor. The doctor will issue a prescription so the patient can purchase it at a pharmacy. The doctor may prescribe it only if other medications have been ineffective.
Medicinal cannabis cannot be purchased in any establishment other than pharmacies.
