First marijuana-themed resort in the US

  • Alcohol and cannabis will be served at the resort to those over 21 years of age and can be consumed in public.

The Santee Sioux Indian Reservation in South Dakota will inaugurate the world's first marijuana-themed resort on New Year's Eve.

This tribe, comprised of approximately 800 people, already boasts a casino, a 120-room hotel, and a ranch with 240 bison on the reservation grounds. Their plans include building ten bowling lanes, a bar, a restaurant, and an arcade, as well as providing shuttle buses for hotel guests to connect the entire resort. Marijuana will be freely available for purchase and consumption throughout the property.

Tribal Chairman Anthony Reider told CNN, “When complete, this economic development project will help create many additional jobs and increase economic stability for the tribe and its members.”.

In the United States, there are already four states where marijuana is legal for recreational use (Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska), and American society is increasingly open to the regulation of marijuana.

Recreational marijuana has not been legalized in South Dakota, but Indian reservations have their own laws supported by the Department of Justice, which stated that it will not interfere with marijuana cultivation and distribution facilities.

The main difference is that while in the four states that allow recreational marijuana use, consumption must be in private spaces, in this resort public consumption will be permitted.

According to the tribe's lawyer, Seth Perman, the Indian reservation will cultivate 60 varieties of "high-quality, contaminant-free, and organic" marijuana.
