The debate on the legalization of marijuana opens in Paraguay

This Thursday, the Minister of the National Anti-Drug Secretariat (Senad), Luis Rojas, said that he is not closed to the debate on the legalization of marijuana.

“SENAD has a clear institutional position: it is illegal because the law says it is illegal, and it must be combated; the law is not up for debate. But we are also a political entity, and we will foster a debate so that, eventually, based on scientific data, the law may or may not be modified.” He added, “We must not close ourselves off to debate.”.

Luis Rojas also declared at the summit of anti-drug authorities of the Southern Common Market (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Venezuela) that the problem will not be solved if Paraguay legalizes marijuana while Brazil, which is one of the largest consumers of cannabis, maintains the prohibition.

Meanwhile, in Uruguay the sale of marijuana has not yet been implemented, although a law regulating the commercialization and production of marijuana was approved in December 2013.
