Drying marijuana – Tutorial
The drying process of marijuana is closely linked to the curing process. And both are essential to obtaining a high-quality product.
By performing these two processes correctly, you can enhance the aroma, flavor, and potency of your cannabis buds. Conversely, if they are not done correctly, your harvest may lose its aroma, flavor, and potency, resulting in a low-quality product.
You have to be patient because it's a slow process. But it's worth it for the reward in product quality.
Cannabinoids do not become psychoactive until marijuana is dry. These cannabinoids become psychoactive when they undergo a chemical transformation that occurs when the plants lose their water content.
During the drying process, marijuana loses approximately 751% of its weight. The drying process typically lasts between 2 and 3 weeks.
In fact, the slower the drying process, the better the result will be in both flavors and aromas.
Conditions for drying marijuana
- Placement: You can hang the plant branches on a string or clothesline, or place the buds on hanging dryers. If you hang the branches, avoid letting them touch each other to prevent mold and mildew. If you use hanging dryers and buds, you should move the buds around for even drying.
- Humidity: Keep it around 50%-60%; too high a humidity would cause the appearance of fungi or mold, and too low a humidity would cause drying too quickly.
- Temperature: It should be between 15º and a maximum of 20º. Higher temperatures cause the terpenes to evaporate quickly.
- Ventilation: The drying area should have minimal air exchange and good air circulation. You can use an oscillating fan, but never point it directly at the buds.
- Lighting: Keep the space dark and avoid light on the marijuana buds because it causes THC degradation.

How to tell when marijuana is dry
Try breaking a branch or stem; it should crack. If it bends or doesn't crack when you try to break it, it needs a little more drying time.
You can also squeeze a marijuana bud. It should be dry on the outside but slightly moist on the inside; in other words, the entire bud shouldn't crumble.
