Cannabis oil to treat fibromyalgia
Cannabis Sativa oil, administered to mice as a drug or food supplement, has been found to be effective against symptoms caused by fibromyalgia, such as neuropathic pain, anxiety, depression, and inflammation.
This discovery was made by scientists from the Medicinal Plants group at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Seville (US), and the experiment was carried out on mice. They found that the mice recovered their cognitive abilities, their pain perception decreased, and their muscle tone normalized after being administered cannabis oil.
Among the components of hemp or cannabis oil are essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in proportions beneficial to health, and the University of Seville has now patented its use for preventing and treating fibromyalgia. They are also seeking a pharmaceutical or food company interested in validating the study in humans and in the commercial exploitation of this compound, which could be supplied in powders, tablets, suppositories, as a dietary supplement, or incorporated directly into food.
It should be noted that the cannabis oil used in the experiments does not contain any narcotics.
Scientists believe that cannabis oil shows better results than olive or sunflower oil due to its proportion of fatty acids.
In 1992, the World Health Organization (WHO) recognized fibromyalgia as a chronic disease, characterized primarily by widespread musculoskeletal pain and tenderness in various areas. Currently, it has become a major public health concern due to limited understanding of its causes and underlying mechanisms, as well as the lack of effective treatments.
M. Dolores García, Professor of the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Seville, states that until now "there is no drug with positive results to treat fibromyalgia" and that is why this discovery is so important.
