Private company to grow marijuana in Jamaica for research

The Jamaican government announced on Monday that a license to cultivate marijuana has been granted to a private Canadian company based in Kingston.

The company in question is the pharmaceutical company Timeless Herbal Care (THC), a company dedicated to the development of medicinal products derived from plants such as marijuana.

The cultivation of THC in Jamaica will be for the research and development of medicinal products.

The government has granted two other marijuana cultivation licenses to the University of the West Indies and the Jamaica Technological University, but this new license is the first issued to a private entity. With this, the government hopes to position Jamaica in the global industry.

It's worth remembering that, in mid-April, the cultivation and consumption of marijuana for medicinal, research, or religious purposes became legal. It also allows the possession of small quantities of marijuana as well as the cultivation of up to five plants for personal use. (Amendment to the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1948)
