Italian scientists discover two new cannabinoids: THCP and CBDP
A group of Italian scientists have discovered two new cannabinoids, THCP (tetrahydrocannabiphorol) and CBDP. These are two chemical compounds produced by the cannabis plant and similar to THC and CBD.
The Cannabis Sativa plant contains more than 400 chemical compounds, but so far only THC has psychoactive effects.
In tests with mice, they discovered that THCP is stronger than THC. They state that it “has an even greater binding affinity for the CB1 receptor and a greater "Cannabimimetic activity that is greater than THC itself." Although it is 30 times more potent than THC, it is still unknown whether THCP is more psychoactive. But results with mice showed that tetrahydrocannabiphorol is more active than THC at lower doses.
They have also identified a derivative of CBD, cannabidiphorol (CBDP).
The results have been published in the journal Nature
Medicinal use of THCP and CBDP
Researchers indicate that THCP could help explain the pharmacological properties of certain cannabis varieties, which previously could not be attributed to the presence of THC alone. They also note its enormous potential for medicinal use.
Although CBDP also provides therapeutic benefits, it is reported to have a poor ability to bind to CB1 or CB2 receptors. Therefore, further exploration of its cannabimimetic activity is not a priority.
For now, it's still unknown what CBDP and THCP might be useful for, but it's possible these chemicals could treat certain conditions better than CBD and THC. They could also have entirely new medical applications, or none at all. We won't know more until further clinical trials, which could take several years.
