Process begins for medicinal cannabis treatment in Puerto Rico
Patients in Puerto Rico have begun the process to obtain permission for their treatment with medicinal cannabis.
The Office of Medicinal Cannabis of the Department of Health, the consulting firm Medcann.Biz, and the Puerto Rican pharmaceutical company NextGen Pharma are organizing this process.
Most of the patients who have benefited from this treatment are over 50 years old and suffer from fibromyalgia, chronic pain, and cancer. These patients understand that cannabis will not cure their illnesses but will help them achieve a better quality of life.
NextGen Pharma's crops are quite advanced and they expect to begin dispensing medicinal cannabis during the month of December.
The island also has two dispensaries that are close to obtaining certification to dispense cannabis.
The introduction of cannabis to the island from another jurisdiction is illegal, therefore the cannabis used will be grown, cured and manufactured on the island.
