Good results for the treatment of schizophrenia with a cannabis-based drug

British firm GW Pharmaceuticals Plc has developed an experimental drug that has shown better results than a placebo for the treatment of schizophrenia; this clinical trial is in the intermediate stage.

The medicine is called cannabidiol and it has been administered to 88 patients with schizophrenia in whom antipsychotic medication had not worked and was given alongside antipsychotic treatment.

GW is also testing its cannabis-based drugs for epilepsy and cancer-related pain.

Interest in medicinal cannabis has expanded since Colorado approved recreational marijuana stores and the Canadian movement boosted the regulated marijuana pharmaceutical industry, and currently in almost half of the states that make up the United States its medicinal use is already legal.
