The debate about whether medical marijuana should be allowed by the NBA, the world's best basketball league, is nothing new. But the situation in the United States is changing daily, and currently, 38 out of 50 states already permit medical marijuana.<\/p>\n

Change the NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement and allow marijuana smoking if it's legal in your state.<\/h2>\n

NBA Commissioner David Stern stated, \u201cWe need to change the Collective Bargaining Agreement and allow marijuana use if it\u2019s legal in your state. Marijuana is currently in the process of legalization, so I believe players should be allowed to use it if it\u2019s legal. It\u2019s time for major sports leagues to anticipate and lead this process.\u201d.<\/p>\n

There are now 18 of the 30 NBA teams (19 if we count the Raptors who are Canadian) that are located in states of the United States where medicinal or therapeutic marijuana is legal.<\/p>\n

According to several former NBA players, such as Clifford Robinson, Blake Griffin, Karl Anthony Towns, and Phil Jackson, players prefer to take marijuana rather than certain medications prescribed by doctors because they are addictive, such as Vicodin, Percocet, etc., and this causes them many addiction problems.<\/p>\n

It's worth noting that a year ago, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver stated, \u201cI have to say, this is an issue we can't lose sight of. I'm very interested in the scientific advancements regarding medical marijuana. My personal opinion is that it should be regulated in the same way as other medications, and the plan is to use it for pain relief. It's something that needs to be discussed with the Players Association. As long as science demonstrates effective uses for medical reasons, we'll be open to legalizing it. Fortunately, in our sport, there isn't as much pain as in others, so it's not really necessary right now.\u201d.<\/p>\n

While Adam Silver has a point about the physical demands compared to other leagues like the NFL, where the debate is also ongoing, it's no excuse for not leading the change.<\/p>\n
