Pharmacies in Uruguay now have legal permission to sell the first medicine based on 'cannabis sativa'.<\/p>\n

This permit has been granted by the Ministry of Health of Uruguay.<\/p>\n

The medication will consist of a 10-milliliter bottle of pure cannabidiol oil without THC (the psychoactive component of marijuana) and will be available in all pharmacies starting December 15, 2017. It will have an approximate price of $100 and is manufactured by the Uruguayan laboratory Medi Plast.<\/p>\n

The brand name of the medication is Epifract\u00e1n. This medication can be administered to children and adolescents with refractory epilepsy and will be applied as drops and sublingually.<\/p>\n

The same laboratories are working on the launch of three additional cannabis-derived products: cannabidiol capsules, drops with a higher concentration, and a cannabipiel cream indicated for dermal treatment and joint pain.<\/p>\n

To provide context, it should be noted that the Uruguayan government legalized the cultivation and consumption of marijuana in 2013, but the sale of marijuana in pharmacies authorized by the Institute for the Regulation and Control of Cannabis (IRCCA) did not begin until July 19, 2017.<\/p>\n
