The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that governments around the world remove cannabis and cannabis resin from the list of dangerous drugs.<\/p>\n

This list is based on Schedule IV of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. This is an international treaty that forms the basis of the global narcotics control regime.<\/p>\n

Experts base their findings on recent evidence showing that cannabis may help with various health problems and has therapeutic properties for some diseases.<\/p>\n

The list of dangerous drugs established by the Single Convention included cannabis and cannabis resin in 1961.<\/p>\n

Tedros Adhanom, the WHO director-general, sent a letter to Ant\u00f3nio Guterres, the UN secretary-general, suggesting that cannabis be considered as a less severe drug.<\/p>\n

The WHO will vote on the exclusion in March 2018<\/h2>\n

This request will be voted on in Vienna in March during the 62nd session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND).<\/p>\n

This request from Adhanom is based on the report that the WHO's expert committee on drugs made at a meeting in November 2018. The report supports the therapeutic potential of cannabis preparations for the treatment of pain and other medical conditions (such as epilepsy and spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis).<\/p>\n

The committee also recommends that THC (tetrahydrocannabidiol), the main psychoactive cannabinoid in cannabis, be designated as a Schedule I drug. Currently, THC is listed in Schedule IV of the 1971 Convention on Psychotropic Substances.<\/p>\n

\n

Heroin is also included in Schedule IV. Therefore, cannabis is considered with the same severity. This restricts scientists' research into potential therapeutic effects of cannabis.<\/p>\n

The committee of experts also proposes that cannabidiol be removed from all international drug control conventions, provided that the product does not contain more than 0.21% THC.<\/p>\n

This decision was made because at a 2017 committee meeting they considered that cannabidiol in its pure state does not appear to be harmful or pose a risk of abuse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
