The island of Guam, an unincorporated territory of the United States in the Pacific, has legalized the recreational use of marijuana.<\/p>\n

"Law 32" was passed by the Senate with 8 votes in favor and 7 against. A week later, Lou Leon Guerrero, governor of Guam, signed the law.<\/p>\n

Guerrero stated: \u201cWe need to regulate this illicit drug, which is the most widely used in our society. We need to have it and control it, monitor its use and effects, benefit from its medicinal properties, and allow our people to live in a safer environment.\u201d.<\/p>\n

The governor also stated that various opinions had been taken into consideration, including those of doctors, social workers, lawyers, police officers, religious leaders, parents, young people, and community representatives.<\/p>\n

Guerrero believes that keeping cannabis illegal is tantamount to denying its existence and allowing the black market to continue its exploitation. He adds, "We have to anticipate this and we must control it.".<\/p>\n

This law will allow those over 21 years of age to grow a maximum of six cannabis plants or possess up to 1 ounce (28.3 grams) of marijuana.<\/p>\n

Until the regulations governing its sale are fully implemented, marijuana cannot be bought or sold. Implementation is expected to be effective within a year.<\/p>\n

According to the regulations, marijuana cannot be consumed in public places, schools, workplaces, or while driving any type of vehicle.<\/p>\n

Guam is the second US territory to legalize marijuana after the Northern Mariana Islands.<\/p>\n
