He also stated, \u201cWe are the first state in the nation to fully legalize cannabis use through a bipartisan legislative process, without the need for a referendum.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative passed with 64 votes in favor and 47 against, and now only requires the Democratic governor&#039;s signature. This will allow the governor to fulfill his campaign promise and make Illinois the eleventh state to legalize the consumption and cultivation of cannabis.<\/p>\n<p>Of the tax revenue generated, 35% will be allocated to the State General Fund, 25% for reinvestment in the community, and 20% for mental health and substance abuse treatment. Resources will also be allocated to cover outstanding state bills, provide law enforcement training grants, and fund public drug education.<\/p>\n<h2>Summary of the law in Illinois<\/h2>\n<p>This new law will allow possession and consumption by non-residents and residents of the state.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of people residing in the state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Those over 21 years of age may acquire and possess up to 30 grams of marijuana, 5 grams of concentrated cannabis or 500 milligrams of THC oil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the case of people who are not residents of the state:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They will be allowed to possess 15 grams of cannabis, 2.5 grams of concentrate, and 250 milligrams of THC oil.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the other hand, residents who choose to cultivate cannabis must register for that purpose. They will be allowed to have up to 5 plants per household, in a closed room out of public view and with the permission of the property owner, if they are tenants.<\/p>\n<p>The law also provides for the erasure of criminal records for people prosecuted for possession and consumption of marijuana in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Recreational marijuana will be sold at licensed dispensaries. Reselling marijuana and taking it out of state will be illegal, as its use remains illegal in much of the United States. Municipalities may also prohibit retail marijuana sales within their boundaries during the first year of the program. After this year, a referendum would be held to determine whether any prohibition would be enforced.<\/p>\n<p>The law prohibits advertising about marijuana use near schools and playgrounds.<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0public transport and public property and any advertising aimed at minors.<\/p>\n<p>The packaging will be sealed and labeled.
