Furthermore, home cultivation will be legal, with a maximum of eight plants per household. While marijuana sales will be rolled out during 2021, the law is expected to take effect in January 2022 with a fixed tax of 20%.<\/p>\n

South Dakota<\/h2>\n

South Dakota approved recreational cannabis use with 521% of the vote and medicinal cannabis use with 691%. Legalization will take effect in July 2021. The possession limit for recreational use is the same as in Montana. For medicinal use, users will be able to cultivate an unlimited number of plants in their homes, but these must be kept out of sight of the public. The sales tax for recreational marijuana will be 151%, while medicinal marijuana will be tax-free. Medical cannabis users will be required to have a medical license.<\/p>\n

New Jersey<\/h2>\n

New Jersey is the most populous of the six states and will play a key role in accelerating discussions about cannabis in neighboring states like New York and Pennsylvania. Medicinal use is already legal in New Jersey, and the state has 12 licensed dispensaries. These dispensaries are expected to begin selling cannabis for recreational use in the second quarter of 2021.<\/p>\n

Arizona<\/h2>\n

In Arizona, the legalization of recreational cannabis use brings about a very significant change. Its legislation regarding both possession and cultivation was among the strictest in the country, carrying prison sentences for possession of even small amounts. With this change, people with prior marijuana convictions will be able to request the expungement of their criminal records. Adults over 21 will be allowed to possess one ounce of marijuana and 5 grams of concentrate. The sales tax will be 21.61 TP32T.<\/p>\n

Mississippi does not approve of recreational cannabis use<\/h2>\n

The state of Mississippi has banned recreational cannabis use but approved its medicinal use. Medical cannabis users will be required to possess a license issued by public authorities starting in July 2021. Initiative 65 also includes a list of 22 diseases or medical conditions for which cannabis can be used for medicinal purposes, including cancer, epilepsy, muscular dystrophy, Parkinson's disease, and glaucoma, among others. Authorities will be responsible for licensing producers and regulating dispensaries, so its commercialization is expected to begin by the end of 2021.<\/p>\n

Oregon<\/h2>\n

The state of Oregon has made history by becoming the first to decriminalize the possession of any type of drug. This doesn't mean it has legalized all drugs, but rather that it will eliminate criminal penalties for possession. Thus, it will be possible to possess less than one gram of heroin, two grams of cocaine, or methamphetamine. However, the sale of all these types of drugs will remain illegal.<\/p>\n

In Oregon, voters have also approved the medicinal use of psilocybin, the main ingredient in magic mushrooms. This measure requires a two-year process to develop specific legislation, and its legalization is expected in 2023 or 2024.
