Success of the 2019 marijuana march in Madrid

Success of the 23rd edition of the marijuana march held on the Gran Vía of Madrid this Saturday, May 11, 2019, to demand the regulation of marijuana.

Thousands of protesters from Spain and other countries around the world gathered to celebrate this march.

The demonstration proceeded peacefully with shouts of "Gran Vía smells like marijuana" or "A joint is not a crime".

During the march, a sit-in was organized for people to chat and smoke. The march was accompanied throughout by green, white, and black balloons, as well as banners calling for the legalization of marijuana for both therapeutic and recreational use.

“It has been shown that it is something that is better regulated than prohibited,” declared Javier Miravete, spokesperson for the Federation of Cannabis Associations of Levante and president of an association.

Javier Puig pointed out that “Now is a time of favorable political winds. They have to answer for the votes they received.” He also expressed his support for the WHO report that called for marijuana to be removed from the list of dangerous drugs, stating, “If the WHO decides this, who, and on what grounds, can go against this recommendation?”.

“I think everyone should be free to choose when to smoke, but without abusing it,” says an anonymous user, because he claims that “if it weren’t prohibited, it would be much better treated.”.

Opinions have also been expressed demanding greater control and transparency regarding the origin and destination of marijuana. These include paying the taxes the government deems appropriate to create a regulatory framework that benefits everyone.
